Check back every Monday for The Free Idea—a fun, entertaining bit of inspiration to help your show connect with your audience even more. You can also view past ideas, many of which my clients and I successfully used to engage listeners.
Now that listeners have been holed up in their homes for months, let’s treat that like their home is a hotel and ask family members to give a Yelp review of the stay. Come up with a few categories and open the phones (start with your home).
With businesses starting to re-open, do a feature a few times a week called The Radio Free Sample. Let people who own businesses come on and tell everyone all about their local business – what they do, where they are, and when they’re open. Give each person a free fifteen seconds and be an advocate […]
With most everyone still holed up inside with their families, problems will bubble up. Choose the sillier ones and do a feature called Quarantine Court where the two parties plead their case to you for advice, then open it up to the jury (12 callers) with a vote on who’s right. Grab some production from […]
Still need that haircut? Get your stylist on FaceTime on one computer right in front of you and give your spouse the shears. The stylist walks your spouse through how to do that as you sip cocktails and carry on a conversation throughout. Let the audience see all of it. A fun video for Facebook […]
I wouldn’t normally endorse doing movie reviews on any show, but with everyone watching them to pass the time while we wait out the virus, let’s make an exception. This could be done as a Friday or Monday feature (or both) – call, tell us the movie you watched, rate it on the 0-5 Corona […]
Dear Morning Show: my hairdresser called to tell me he’s pulling the shades at the shop and quietly cutting the hair of two people every day. He asks if I’d like to come Friday at 10am to get my hair cut. I’d have to pay in cash and could not tell anyone who did it. […]
We gave you the idea of couples cutting each other’s hair with no salons being open during the pandemic. Now, a twist. What if someone on the show got their hair cut by someone who only grooms dogs? It’s a funny thesis. Go find one, introduce them to the audience, then see what you get.
With salons closed, a topic of conversation in many homes is who will cut your hair. Either within your team, with listeners, or both, find couples who are concerned about this and get him to do her hair. There are lots of YouTubes on this so go grab some audio and find a stylist or […]
The reason many shelves are empty at grocery stores is because restaurants are closed and everyone must cook at home. To stay afloat, as you know, restaurants are doing take out (or delivery) only. Many of these are small mom-and-pops trying to continue serving their customers. Every day, do the Take Out Shout Out where […]
With lots of people working out of their house, if they are trapped there with kids, ask them to call and tell you what their kids are up to during their workday, but make them refer to the kids as their “co-workers”.
Christine and Salt, 965, TIC-FM, Hartford do the Great Debate Eight on occasion (at, oddly enough, 8:00) and got into some fun phone calls with their listeners around this topic: with more people staying at home because of the coronavirus, what will there be more of in nine months, babies or divorces?
Who doesn’t love a new game listeners can play along with in the car? The Insta Fame Game is where you have two listeners on the phone, give them a celebrity, and they must guess how many followers that star has on Instagram. Whoever comes closest wins a point. First to three points gets the […]
We have one of our rare Leap Days in the calendar this week. Why do we have those? I have no idea! Bet your listeners don’t know, either. Go out and ask people why there are Leap Days. Play the most fun audio, then get an expert on who’ll explain it to the audience.
With the coronavirus and the flu in the news, here’s a new game to play to give out prizes called Ten Seconds to Death,. Get into WebMD and research old diseases from centuries ago that everyone has heard of, but have long been cured. Give out the symptoms and the caller must identify the disease […]
We’re doing a fun thing this week with Salt and Christine, 96.5 WTIC-FM, Hartford. Christine has been married for a while and the Valentine’s Day gifts from her spouse have grown less inspiring. So, Christine will challenge her real husband and Salt (her work husband) to conspire to come up with a great Valentine’s Day […]
With all the pictures of Kobe Bryant and his daughter on social media in the last week, celebrate Girl Dads by putting on fathers of daughters so they can gush about them.
Many of your listeners are married to a guy who gave up on Valentine’s Day years ago. Find a person musically inclined (or grab those in your cast who can sing and play an instrument) and visit a few at work to serenade them for the holiday. Call it The Cubicle Casanova. Produce a few […]
The Super Bowl is less than two weeks away. What would you do to make sparkle getting one listener the day off from work the day after the Super Bowl? Every year we hear chatter that that Monday should be a holiday – make it come true for one listener in a way that’s big, […]
Where are many listeners going in the first half hour of your show each day? To the gym. Find a bunch via social media and spend the next few weeks checking on them early in the morning to make sure they are headed there and to support their weight loss efforts.
Most shows will ask listeners this week what their New Year’s resolution is (snooze). Ask it differently, by asking the audience to call and offer up a New Year’s resolution for their boss.
Need help with that? Give me a shout!

/0 Comments/in Free Idea /by steve@reynoldsgroupradio.com“Dirty Little Secrets” is where each member of the show writes a secret about their life and places it in a hat. It’d be things like: this show member had liposuction last month, this show member is unhappy in their marriage, this show member just bought a relative a car for their birthday, this show member contracted crabs while in college, this show member cries at the end of chick flics. The secret is read and listeners must figure out who on the show it applies to. This is a great character building bit, because it reveals your talent by making them vulnerable.
